WHAT IS ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?
In cases when tooth decay progresses to the dental pulp involving nerve of the tooth, causing an infection at the tip of the tooth root leading to pain and sometimes swelling, results in root canal treatment. Thus, root canal treatment is the removal of infection within the tooth. This is the last resort to save the tooth.
WHEN IS ROOT CANAL ADVISED?
- Continuous Pain
- Pain during food chewing
- Pain during hot/cold food intake
- Pain during evening or night
- Sensitivity during hot/cold food intake which stays for sometime
- Change in tooth color
- Swelling the gums surrounding the tooth
At times when the infection persists for a long time, there may be no symptoms.
NUMBER OF VISITS?
- The root canal treatment can be done in single or two sittings followed by crown (Separate sitting)
- Single sitting is advised for cases where there is no swelling, tooth taken as support for bridges.
- Two sitting is advised for cases where the infection, swelling is quite severe.
IS ROOT CANAL TREATMENT PAINFUL?
During root canal treatment, local anesthetic will be given. Once the procedure is over pain is expected for 2 days for which pain medications will be prescribed.
WHAT IS THE SUCCESS RATE OF ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?
The success rate of a root canal is high if done properly and correctly maintained. Reinfection of root canal treated tooth might happen due to various reasons such as no proper follow up, infection from the underlying gums, infection from neighboring tooth, crown not placed or crown not maintained properly. In cases of reinfection, root canal retreatment can be done but success is less.
IS THERE ANY RESTRICTION IN FOOD?
The only restriction is until crowned avoid hard food and intake soft food as the root canal treated tooth is brittle and might break due to hard food or force.
STEPS DONE DURING ROOT CANAL TREATMENT:
WHY IS POST NEEDED IN CERTAIN CASES?
In certain cases, the amount of sound tooth structure will less. Hence the tooth cannot support the crown leading to the breakage of a tooth. To overcome this, a post made of fiber or metal is placed in the tooth.
WHY IS CROWN NECESSARY?
Since most of the sound tooth structure is lost, after root canal tooth becomes brittle and weak because of which the tooth cannot withstand the force during chewing. Crown acts as a protective covering takes the force of chewing thus protecting the tooth from further damage. know more..
